My Great Books List

Steven Shaviro: Here's my list of the greatest American novels of the second half of the twentieth century. Part of my motivation for doing this is that I believe, contrary to majority opinion, that the second half of the twentieth century was a better time for American fiction than the first half. Shaviro is an English professor at the University of Washington. His list is pretty eclectic, and interestingly enough, loaded with more than a handful of excellent, and criminally under-read, African American writers: Octavia Butler, Ralph Ellison, Chester Himes, Samuel Delany, Donald Goines, Ishmael Reed. These aren't the kind of names you'll see on the New York Times Bestseller List. (found b/w Alamut)
